Let’s drink some Hefeweizen

German hefeweizens pouting for the camera!

Get a load of these wonderful Hefeweizens pouting for the camera!

Right now in the Bay Area things have been heating up to daytime temps of 70 degrees. I love it…except for the worry of yet another drought year. My thirst has moved from porters and other darkers beers to Hefes. Particularly after finding a beautiful Schneider Weisse hefe glass at my local German deli. So it made sense to do a German Hefe tasting so that I can re-introduce my taste buds to a great beer style that I haven’t had in awhile.
I went down to my local Bevmo liquor store and purchased pretty much their range of imported Hefes. The only other one I need to nab is Ayinger Brau-Weisse….unfortunately they were out of it so it’s not in the photo shoot. After completing all of my tastes I’ll post notes that will be simple and a good guide for getting a hefe that suits you. Think of it as a beer guide and comparison in laymans terms. Until then please click on the picture and enjoy these beauties!

How I'll take the SRM range for each beer

Since I’m currently not doing any work on the Take it to the Brewer series, I am happy to be able to roll up the sleeves and do a beer blog post proper with some nice detail. So for a good visual comparison of color I’ve decided to take an “SRM color slice” of each beer. Meaning, since it is difficult for me to get one overall color, I’ll take a range as it presents itslef from the photos I take of each beer. This is not laboratory conditions but it will be good enough and will give a nice comparison. Photos are being shot in the same lighting and setup. In post processing, I’ll do any adjustments to exposure and white balance.

The slice comparison chart of all of these beers will be included along with my tasting notes in a post next week (click on the thumbnail to see an example).

Enjoy the weekend, if you are outside the Bay Area….you will probably need a think jacket.

Cheers.
